The Best Diligence Is Being The Customer
FleetCore Logistics became a Polt.AI customer before Magnor Equity Partners ever discussed a position. Watching a product work from inside a company you operate beats anything a deck can tell you.
Magnor Equity Partners is partnering with Polt.AI to help scale it. The route to that deal is worth writing down, because it is the route the firm would choose every time if it could.
How does a firm normally evaluate a software company?
A deck, a demo, a few reference calls, and a data room. Every one of those is curated by the company being evaluated.
A demo shows the product working on data chosen to make it work. A reference call reaches a customer the company selected. None of it is dishonest, and none of it tells you what happens on a Tuesday when a load falls through and somebody needs the system to do something it was not designed for.
What happened instead
FleetCore Logistics became a Polt.AI customer.
FleetCore Logistics is a full truckload freight brokerage already in the Magnor Equity Partners portfolio, and Polt.AI is the transportation management system a brokerage runs on. So the firm watched the product carry real freight, inside a company it operates, for months, with its own money on the line and no incentive on either side to flatter the result.
That answered the questions a data room cannot:
- Does it hold up under real volume
- Observed daily inside a working brokerage, not in a sandbox.
- What happens when something breaks
- Support response and fix quality, seen as a paying customer rather than as a prospect.
- Would the team keep paying for it
- The only renewal question that matters, and FleetCore answered it by renewing.
- Is the product the constraint, or is acquisition
- The whole basis of a partnership. A product problem is not one the firm can fix.
Why that last question decides everything
Magnor Equity Partners takes positions where client acquisition is the ceiling. The firm can build a pipeline, install a sales team and run the backend. It cannot fix a product that does not work.
Being the customer settles that question with evidence instead of judgement. Polt.AI already works for the people using it, which means the gap between where the company is and where it could be sits at the front of the business. That is the gap the firm exists to close.
What the firm brings to a software company
The same four functions, pointed at a different buyer. Paid advertising, outbound, the backend selling systems, and the sales team.
Freight brokers buy software differently from how shippers buy freight, so the offer, the message and the objections all change. The machinery underneath does not. Hiring a rep, building a campaign, writing a cadence and holding a team to weekly numbers are the same job in any B2B company, which is the reason the firm can run one playbook across a portfolio that contains both a brokerage and the software that brokerage runs on.
The uncomfortable part
This route does not scale. Most companies the firm evaluates will never be a customer of a portfolio company first, so most diligence will stay ordinary.
What it does give is a standard worth holding the ordinary version against. When the firm cannot be the customer, the next best thing is to talk to customers the company did not choose, and to weigh a founder’s answer about what breaks far more heavily than a demo of what works.

Questions about the Polt.AI partnership
What is Polt.AI?
Polt.AI is an AI native transportation management system for freight brokers and third party logistics companies. It is the software a brokerage runs its loads, its carriers and its customers on, which makes it the system the whole operation depends on daily.
How did Magnor Equity Partners find Polt.AI?
Through FleetCore Logistics, a portfolio company that became a Polt.AI customer. The firm watched the product carry real freight inside a brokerage it operates, over months, before anyone discussed a position. That is better evidence than any demo or reference call produces.
What does the firm do for a software company?
The same four functions it runs everywhere: paid advertising, outbound, the backend selling systems, and the sales team. Software sells differently from freight, so the offer and the buyer change. How you build a pipeline and hold a team to numbers does not.
